SKU: N/A Category:

Gourmet mushrooms. Medicinal mushrooms. A whole lot of fungi.

Not everything in mycology is about spores.

Our liquid cultures are for the other side of the mushroom world — the species you actually want to get to know, grow and eventually enjoy on a plate.

From fast-growing oysters to slow-and-steady Reishi. From familiar Shiitake to the wonderfully strange Lion’s Mane.

There’s plenty to explore.

What’s a Liquid Culture?

A liquid culture is a suspension containing fungal mycelium in a nutrient-rich liquid medium.

In other words:

Mycelium. In liquid. Ready to go.

It’s a fascinating way of working with fungi and one of the many techniques used by mushroom growers and mycologists.

Rather than dealing with microscopic spores, you’re looking at the vegetative part of the fungus — the mycelium.

That makes liquid culture a completely different product from our spore collection.

Why Liquid Culture?

Because sometimes you want to work with mycelium rather than spores.

Liquid cultures give you a different way to work with fungal species and provide an interesting window into the biology of mushrooms.

And with gourmet and medicinal species, there’s an enormous amount to explore.

Different species.

Different growth habits.

Different shapes, colours and textures.

Same basic fascination.

Fungi doing fungi things.

Gourmet Mushrooms

There’s something particularly satisfying about growing a mushroom that eventually ends up in the kitchen.

Oysters. Shiitake. Maitake. Lion’s Mane. Chicken of the Woods.

These aren’t just interesting organisms to look at.

They’re food.

Different species have their own flavours, textures and culinary uses, which is part of what makes gourmet mushroom cultivation so appealing.

Start with one.

Then inevitably end up wanting another twelve.

Medicinal & Functional Mushrooms

Some of the world’s most interesting fungi have a long history of traditional use and modern research.

Reishi. Turkey Tail. Lion’s Mane. Cordyceps.

They’re increasingly being studied for their biological properties and potential applications, making them particularly interesting species for anyone with an interest in functional and medicinal mycology.

We don’t make exaggerated health claims.

The fungi are interesting enough without them.

Mycology Without the Boring Bits

We like fungi.

The weird ones. The beautiful ones. The ones you can eat. The ones that look like something from another planet.

Our aim is pretty simple:

Make interesting fungal material accessible.

And explain what’s actually going on along the way.

No endless jargon.

No miracle claims.

Just good fungi and useful information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mushroom liquid culture?

A liquid culture is a liquid medium containing fungal mycelium. It’s a way of maintaining and working with a particular mushroom culture.

Which mushroom species are available?

We currently offer 15 varieties, including Oyster mushrooms, Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Lion’s Mane, Turkey Tail, Cordyceps and Chicken of the Woods. The available varieties are shown in the selection dropdown.

Are these gourmet mushrooms?

Some are. Blue Oyster, Pink Oyster, Golden Oyster, Grey Oyster, King Oyster, Enoki, Shiitake, Maitake, Black Poplar and Chicken of the Woods are associated with culinary mushroom cultivation.

Which varieties are considered medicinal or functional mushrooms?

Reishi, Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps are commonly discussed as medicinal or functional mushrooms. Their properties are an active area of scientific research, and we don’t make claims that these products treat or prevent disease.

Are liquid cultures the same as mushroom spores?

No.

Spores are microscopic reproductive cells. Liquid cultures contain mycelium.

They’re two completely different ways of working with fungi.

Can I select different mushroom varieties?

Yes. The product is set up as a variable product, so you can select the variety you want from the dropdown.

Are liquid cultures suitable for cultivation?

These cultures are supplied for lawful mycological research and cultivation of appropriate gourmet and medicinal mushroom species. Always check that your intended use is legal where you live.
